Last month, Amazon released a new video showing a prototype of one of its delivery drones, which shares features of both helicopters and airplanes. Clearly, the company is proceeding full speed ahead with this radical idea.
Recently, while researching a story about the legal status of drones for CBS Sunday Morning, I interviewed Paul Misener, Amazon’s vice president for global public policy. Given the speed with which Amazon is apparently advancing with its drone program, I thought it’d be a good time to publish a more complete version of that interview here.
Paul Misener: Well, soon after I joined Amazon in early 2000, my young son was sitting on my lap. We ordered something from Amazon, and he hopped off and ran up to the front door, waiting for the brown truck to show up on the spot. That was a high-delivery expectation. (Laughs.) I had to explain that just because we’d bought this thing doesn’t mean it’s at the front door yet.
So Prime Air is a future delivery service that will get packages to customers within 30 minutes of them ordering it online at Amazon.com. The goals we’ve set for ourselves are: The range has to be over 10 miles. These things will weigh about 55 pounds each, but they’ll be able to deliver parcels that weigh up to five pounds. It turns out that the vast majority of the things we sell at Amazon weigh less than five pounds.
I do a lot of work on my laptop, and nudging around a cursor with a little touchpad seriously slows me down. But most laptop mice are awful. They're bulky, fall apart in your bag, and burn through batteries like crazy.Worst of all: they make you futz with a cheap little switch at the bottom in order to turn them on and pair them with your computer. Then, switch out of sight, it's easy to forget to turn them off before chucking them in your bag. Hello battery drain. The years-old Microsoft Arc- and Surface-Touch Mouse line elegantly solves all those problems.
Running on a single AAA battery, it only needs a change once every several months with heavy use. It weighs next to nothing, and has a slim profile to fit in small pockets. Even better, it's invincible. I regularly chuck mine into backpacks with heavy books and my laptop, but it only shows minimal wear:But that's not even the best part. This mouse is a little design wonder because its whole body is the switch. In the above photo, the mouse is off. Bend the back of the mouse down...
And it turns on, connecting to my computer and assuming its mousey shape. This simple solution means I never forget to turn it off before stowing. One quick pop and its off again, ready to store in my bag.The mouse comes in two versions. The Arc version sells for $17.99 on Amazon from authorized sellers and requires a USB dongle. The Surface version sells for $39.99 and connects directly over Bluetooth.

In Windows 10, as with previous versions, there are three basic options when you turn off your computer: shut down, sleep and restart. When you choose shut down, your PC will do different things depending on whether hibernate is enabled or disabled. See also: Windows Advisor for all Windows tips and tricks
Hibernate is – as far as you’re concerned as a user – the same as Sleep mode. It means you can carry on where you left off: all your apps will be open and where you left them, and browser tabs will still be open. Hibernate is also linked with Fast Startup in Windows 10.

In Sleep mode, all this information is stored in RAM, which makes it quick to resume when you wake your PC. But if the power is turned off, or the battery in your laptop runs flat the system state is lost and you’ll have to boot from scratch and start from Windows’ desktop. You might even lose unsaved work.
With hibernate, which is enabled by default on most PCs and laptops, the information about which apps are open and your unsaved documents are also written to the hard drive in a file called hiberfil.sys. Even if your PC has been without power for weeks, it matters not: Windows 10 will read this file when it boots up and restore everything as it was when you clicked the Shut Down button.
If you want to enable hibernation because your PC isn’t saving your progress and “cold” booting each time, here’s how to do it.
In Windows 10, you can right-click on the Start button and choose Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu that appears.
Type powercfg –h on and press Return. You won’t see any confirmation of success, but you should see an error if it doesn’t work for any reason.
PCs equipped with ‘InstantGo’ don’t have hibernation, for example, so you can’t enable or disable it.
Click Change Plan Settings next to the power plan which is currently selected, then click the Change advanced power settings link at the bottom.
In the window that appears, scroll to Sleep and expand it by pressing the small + sign. Set the time after which you want your computer to go into hibernate. If you can’t see ‘Hibernate after’ under Sleep it’s because hibernate has been disabled, or is not available on your PC or laptop.
Also, under Battery (which applies to laptops, naturally), make sure the Critical battery action is set to hibernate.
Conversely, if you disable hibernate make sure that the critical battery action is NOT set to Hibernate. Instead, choose Sleep or Shut down.
How to make your PC hibernate using the power button or lid
It’s useful to have your computer hibernate when the battery runs out, but you might have a desktop PC (with no battery) or you want it to hibernate when you close your laptop’s lid or press the power button.
If so, it’s easy to configure. By default, your laptop will be set to sleep when you close the lid or press the power button. With a PC, it might be set to shut down when you hit the power button.
The settings are in the same list of power options as Sleep and Battery as described above. Just scroll up to Power buttons and lid, and then choose the Lid close action, Power button action and – if you have one – Sleep button action.
Under each you can choose different actions depending on whether your laptop is running on battery or mains power. For PCs, you shouldn’t see the ‘On battery’ options.
Windows tablets don't enjoy the same popularity as Android tablets or Apple's iPad, but that doesn't stop the big players releasing them. When we looked at Lenovo's ThinkPad 10 recently, we found it somewhat over-priced and under-powered. Has HP got the mix right with its new Pro Tablet 608 G1?

A major benefit of the Transaction Effort Score is that it represents a leading indicator that identifies areas for improvement before consumers complete their digital transaction. This makes it useful for analyzing how large-scale or incremental adjustments will affect the score, and in turn, reduce customer effort.
As is discussed in the best-selling Digital Banking Report, Digital Account Opening, there are many ways banks and credit unions can improve the account opening and application process, leveraging digital technologies and common sense. Each improvement will reduce friction, simplify the process and enhance the consumer experience … leading to reduced abandonment and improved revenues.
Minimize fields, reduce keystrokes and minimize scrolling. Ask only for the specific information required and nothing more. Remember, the more information you require, the more effort is needed and the higher the TES. In addition to minimizing fields, require as few keystrokes as possible and make forms easy to navigate. Remember, scrolling and keystrokes take more time and effort – especially on mobile devices.
Collect the easiest information first. Asking for the basic information first (name, email address and phone number) not only gets the consumer engaged with the least amount of effort, this information is key if the consumer abandons the process later. With this insight, you can get back in touch immediately. In addition, the more time the consumer has invested in the process, the more likely they will complete the application rather than abandoning.
Offer “Save” and multichannel functionality. Consumers move from channel to channel during application and account opening, so offer “Save” functionality to help preserve information already entered. “Restarts” lead to high abandon rates. Allowing consumers to utilize different devices to complete a transaction, such as switching between digital, in-person visits, or calling a call center improves completion rates.
Make the experience 100% digital. A streamlined, 100% digital experience is a must. Presenting consumers with a digital form to complete and then requiring them to visit a branch office to finalize details or submit paper documents results in a much higher abandon rate. All processes should enable the ability to submit documents electronically and support digital signatures.
Onboard for the requested product. Resist the temptation to market or inform the consumer about ancillary products or services until after they’ve completed the application or account opening initially requested. After the primary product or service has been opening, additional cross-sell or upsell suggestions can be provided.
